NOTD - Barry M Gelly Nail Paint - Watermelon

Bonjour!

When I first looked at the Barry M Gelly Nail Paints - this is the colour which grabbed me immediately - don't ask me why - it just did! Somewhere between a deep blue and green the name 'Watermelon' must relate to the skin and not the flesh of the fruit...

Unfortunately I didn't find application very easy! The polish is pretty thick and you have to load the brush with just the correct amount - too little and it streaks, too much and it goes all over the place (for me anyway). I'm no 'experienced nail-painter' so I really had to take my time with it (something I don't have a lot of) and still managed to make a mess - is it just me?  It didn't last too long once on - it's meant to be a chip resistant formula but the ends were showing signs of wear and tear after a day and a half (with a top-coat). Also - just seemed to take a bit longer to dry than a standard polish - ah well.

Just as an aside is that this is the 'one' I took down to London with me for the Daniel Sandler Make-Up Masterclass - which can read about here. I painted my nails in the middle of the night knelt on the bathroom floor and managed a much neater job than the few times I've used it at home in broad daylight - so what's that all about then - are one's powers of concentration and dexterity heightened at that time of night or what?!

I do love the colour of 'Watermelon' though and the glossy 'vinyl-look' finish so I will be persevering (have another colour to try anyway) to see if I can improve my technique with it and add a bulletproof top coat - which I've still to buy. If anyone has any tips on how to apply this polish correctly and keep it chip free then please share - cos I ain't giving up just yet!

Have you tried the Barry M Gelly Nail Paints? How did you manage?

  1. This is quite an interesting name for such a polish color. Who would expect that a watermelon would like that bluish...

    1. I thought so too Luchessa - they're usually more deep green aren't they - never mind. I love the colour - in case you hadn't guessed! xx

  2. The colour is really lovely, I think I might have to try this for myself. The best way I have found to stop my nail polish chopping is New Rimmel finishing 3D plumping top coat. You can pick it up from boots for £4.49 and it is definitely well worth buying! I was wearing a Ciate gold nail polish that kept chipping but after putting 2 coats of this on it stayed put with no chips for 3 days! Hope this might help :) x

  3. I struggled too Jen as you know - they are thick and it is difficult to manage, but they are lovely and shiny. I keep looking at the ones I've got, but never have enough time to try again and do it properly. There must be a knack to it. I couldn't get them smooth at all. Maybe I'm too much in a rush always!

    1. I've seen loads of smooth images of the Gellies but can't do it myself - as you say we haven't got the knack yet. I do love the shiny finish though! Going to have a go with the other Gelly I bought soon - but just need the time - always in a rush too Claire! xx

  4. I think Nails Inc do a similar shade (I got a free one the other year with a magazine but gave it to a friend so can't tell you the colour) and it went on beautifully but it wasn't very me. I always called it Barclays Bank myself which seems more appropriate than watermelon. But if you could just get hold of a similar shade that you like, you could get the Nails Inc gel topcoats which should give you the gel shine finish you like and I guess it would mean you could use it on any colour rather than restricting it to the rather awkward to apply gel colours out there at the moment. It's just a thought but I'm no expert. I have a lot of varnishes but I only use about 5 because I'm boring :o)

    1. That's a great idea Sue thanks - didn't even know Nails Inc did a gel topcoat (I'm not too 'nail savvy' incase you hadn't guessed!) :) x

  5. I love the Barry M Gelly range. My favourite is Grapefuit. It's the best bright pink polish I've ever bought!

  7. Pretty colour, shame about the consistency though! I've been so eager to try the Barry M polishes but your description doesn't make it very enticing!
